The proposed aquaponics program at
Honokaa High School will benefit the students as they
learn innovative agriculture techniques, job skills,
business management and life skills. In addition,
aquaponics is an ideal means of teaching students plant
science, nutrition, physiology and care, pH
relationships, nitrification, biology, fish anatomy and
nutrition and high-tech agriculture. |

The proposed system will be designed and implemented by
Nelson and Pade, Inc. and run by the students at Honokaa, under
the guidance of the Agriculture Instructor and with ongoing
support for Terry Astro and Nathan Kawashima. With a total
production capability of 400 plants/week and 1440 lbs/fish per
year, this program will be self-sustaining. Students will
manage the production as well as marketing and sales of the
crops.
Based on the production capability of these two aquaponic
systems, retail sales of the vegetables and fish could exceed
$50,000. Income from sales will go back to the program for
supplies, fish food, new equipment and program expansion.
Students will learn all facets of running an innovative
aquaponic business and will gain entrepreneurial, management and
agricultural skills that will assist them throughout their
lifetime.
The Honokaa High School Agriculture Program is well poised to
establish this program because there is a high level of
enthusiasm for educating students in innovative and alternative
methods of agriculture and much of the required infrastructure
is already in place. There are currently 3—12’ x 60’ screen
covered greenhouses, each with electricity and water already
installed.
