New Attractions Coming to
Sid’s Ponds and Gardenscapes

Teachers, students and the general public will soon have the opportunity to learn about hydroponic and aquaponic technology at Sid’s Ponds and Gardenscapes, Inc. in Hornby, Ontario.

A unique display of aquaponic and hydroponic systems is being planned for Sid’s Ponds and Gardenscapes and will be installed and ready for visitors this fall.  Prior to the opening of the main displays, an aquaponic system will be on display this summer to demonstrate the concept and introduce the idea to customers and visitors to Sid’s Ponds.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil.  In an aquaponic system, hydroponics is combined with aquaculture to produce healthy and safe fish and vegetables, which are grown in one integrated, recirculating system.  This creates a mini ecosystem where both plants and fish can thrive because the fish waste provides a food source for the growing plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the fish.   These technologies have the potential to help feed people around the world while protecting natural resources, utilizing waste and conserving water.

Imtiaz Mustapha, owner of Sid’s Ponds, has hired Nelson and Pade, Inc. www.aquaponics.com, to design the display, develop custom curriculums and provide on-going support.  Nelson and Pade, Inc. is known in the industry for experience in aquaponic system design and agri-tourism.

Beginning this fall, Sid’s Ponds will offer a variety of tours of the aquaponic and hydroponic displays.  Each tour will provide information specific to the group visiting.  These will include educational tours for school groups of all ages, garden clubs and the general public.   Aquaponics and hydroponics are excellent teaching models for students of all ages because theses methods of growing plants and fish demonstrate many concepts taught in biology and the sciences.

During tours, visitors will be able to wander among the most innovative aquaponic, hydroponic and organic systems, viewing lush plants and exotic fruits while learning about modern and futuristic food production techniques.

Imagine vine ripened tomatoes ready to harvest, brilliantly colored flowers spilling out of a container, strawberries grown from floor to ceiling and banana trees that seem to be growing through the roof.  Lush lettuce plants will float on a raft on a nutrient-rich pond with colorful fish swimming in a tank nearby…long seedless cucumbers will hang from an A-frame trellis that straddles the pond and peppers in a rainbow of colors will thrive.

Sid’s Ponds and Gardenscapes is a dynamic garden center on 8 acres of land.  In addition to a large retail showroom and 8 display garden ponds, Sid’s is also home to an 18 hole mini golf and a 1/10th scale race track for remote control electric cars.  The aquaponic and hydroponic displays will complement the existing facility and will provide a unique learning experience for all.
